Roger Moore, the actor to portray “international man of mystery”James Bond in more films than any other actor, died Tuesday of cancer at age 89. The suave and well-loved star, who was Bond in seven films between 1973 and 1985, visited Thailand during the filming of the The Man With The Golden Gun (1974).
In this clip, brought to Coconuts’ attention by local author and culture expert Jim Algie, Moore traverses a Bangkok canal in a longtail boat. In it, a young Thai boy offers a teak elephant for THB100, then THB80, then THB60 before jumping off a tourist boat and jumping on with Moore to offer him the souvenir and telling him he’s a “very handsome man.” Well, the kid was right about that.
The scenery of old Bangkok as seen by khlong, or canal, is amazing as the scene picks up speed and the bad guys pursue Moore. Teak homes, houseboats, and people washing in the canal are like a love letter to old Bangkok.
For some reason, Moore wears a karate gi in the scene but we can overlook that.
Here is a montage of Moore as Bond in the same field piloting a small plane to arrive at the small Phang Nga island that would later become known as James Bond Island due to these memorable scenes:
RIP Sir Roger, there will never be another Bond like you.
