ThaiGov won’t sue over ‘Singkran’

The appointed guardians of Thai culture have denied reports they might sue organizers of a Singaporean Songkran festival.

After news of a possible lawsuit drew much ridicule, Yupa Taweewattana-boworn of the Culture Surveillance Bureau said her comments were misunderstood, as the Ministry of Culture never had any intention to take legal action.

She told Khaosod news that media accounts suggesting otherwise have “caused damage to me, and to the Ministry of Culture.”

News of the festival being Shanghaied by Singaporean prompted criticism from many earlier this week who felt it was a corruption of the tradition.
