Thai woman killed in Bhutan cliff fall ‘was not posing for selfie’

The family of a Thai woman who died when she fell off a cliff while on vacation in Bhutan, dismissed speculation yesterday that she slipped while taking a selfie.

Navarat Borwornjirapat, 58, from Pathumthani, reportedly visited Taktsang Monastery in Paro, Bhutan, with a Thai tour group on Friday before falling to her death.

Officials commented that Navarat may have fallen while photographing the scenery.

Her husband, Wut, said Navarat went to Bhutan with a group of friends on a tour booked in Thailand. She loved to travel and visit temples, and it was her first trip to Bhutan.

His wife’s friends called him on Friday, saying she died while walking down a cliff to a restaurant after worshipping at the cliffside temple.

“The spot where she fell does not have any railings or barriers. It is unlikely that she took a ‘selfie’ at the ledge, which is only 40-50 centimetres wide. Nobody could do that,” Wut said.

According to witnesses, Navarat was trying to take a photo of the scenery, but her daughter did not believe it and said her mom doesn’t “take selfies”.

Navarat’s body has been transported back to Thailand for the funeral, The Nation and state media reported.
