Thai vets successfully remove over 900 coins from turtle’s stomach

Veterinarians from Chulalongkorn University successfully saved the life of a 25-year-old female turtle and removed a total of 915 coins from her stomach yesterday.

A team of five doctors and staff spent nearly seven hours to remove five kilograms of coins from the green sea turtle, nicknamed “Ormsin,” who was going to die within two months if she didn’t receive treatment.

Ormsin, which translates to “Piggy Bank,” was rescued late last month from a turtle breeding pond in Chonburi that went out of business. People had been throwing coins into her pond while wishing to live a long life like a turtle.

Ormsin will be nursed at the Royal Thai Navy’s Sea Turtle Conservation Center in Chonburi before being released into the sea once she makes a full recovery, The Nation reported.
