Following a raid of 10 warehouses, Thailand’s Department of Special Investigation (equivalent to the US’ FBI) announced a THB10 million (US$312,500) haul of unlicensed brand name tumblers at a press conference this morning.
After one of the parties affected by the fakes complained to the DSI about cups being illegally imported with ripped off logos, a two-month long investigation was opened, reported Bangkok Bizz News.
Tuesday afternoon, the police raided 10 warehouses in Bangkok’s Chinatown area and arrested nine people after discovering nearly 60,000 cups with brand logos ranging from Starbucks and Manchester United to Harley-Davidson and Doraemon.
The fake tumblers were to have been sold for about THB200 (US$6) a pop, while a real brand-name tumbler would cost six to seven times that.
Pol. Gen. Pinit Tangsakul of the Department of Intellectual Property said that the tumblers had been illegally brought into Thailand and untaxed.
The nine arrested were charged under the trademark and copyright acts, while police vowed to keep their eyes on fake merchandise, particularly football-related goods as the first match of the World Cup 2018 is scheduled for later tonight.
