Thai-Japanese uni student arrested for repeated shoplifting

A young Thai-Japanese woman was arrested last night after she was caught on surveillance cameras stealing from Fairy Plaza, a shopping mall in Khon Kaen.

University student Akina Tada, 21, was identified as the well-dressed woman in the CCTV clip who stole two Adidas jackets and a purse on Dec. 5 and Dec. 14.

Police said the young woman, a Nakhon Ratchasima native, confessed to the crime, adding she had also stolen two pairs of shoes from the same mall before, Thairath reported.

Police said Tada had been treated for mental illness at Khon Kaen Rajanagarindra Psychiatric Hospital and believed her shoplifting habit was driven by her depression since they don’t believe she used any of the stolen goods — she just kept them in her dorm room.

Tada has been charged with theft. She’s facing three years in jail and and a maximum fine of THB6,000.
