Here’s a cautionary tale for you gun owners out there (we’ve got some American readership, right?).

A 41-year-old gun cleaner for hire — yes, that’s a job apparently — shot himself in the leg yesterday after forgetting to remove a loaded magazine from the weapon he was cleaning, a move you might more readily expect from an amateur gun cleaner.

Suvarnabhumi Airport Police Station and emergency workers were first on the scene, as the incident, which took place around noon, occurred in a neighborhood near Bangkok’s international airport.

They arrived to find Damrongkiat Siuram in serious condition, with a bloody wound on his left leg, reported Workpoint. The bullet he accidentally fired reportedly went straight through his leg, shattering the bone.

Ouch.

After administering basic first aid, officials rushed Damrongkiat to Chularat Suvarnabhumi Hospital.

Damrongkiat told police that he sells police uniforms and accessories out of a shop next to Suvarnabhumi Airport, and does the gun-cleaning as a side gig. He had already finished cleaning three other guns prior to the accident, reported Channel 7 News.

Damrongkiat said he usually always remembers to take the magazine out. Unfortunately, this is the sort of thing where even one screw-up tends to take a toll.

Police have taken in the 11mm pistol involved for evidence and further examination.

They will also reportedly continue interrogating witnesses before drawing any final conclusions.
