The race to outfit the region’s aircraft with wireless Internet took another step as Thai Airways International has been licensed to install WiFi service aboard its new planes.
The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications granted the airline to offer WiFi on 2.4 gigahertz for six of its new A380-800s and seven A330-300s.
With the competition over budget airspace heating up in recent years, wireless Internet is an important carrot for airlines to dangle in a bid to win greater market share.
NBTC is still considering Thai Airway’s request to provide in-flight phone call service.
Should the airline’s service come online next year, it would become the sixth in Asia to offer WiFi, Thai PBS reported.
Last week, Nok Air sought to pre-empt its competitors by announcing some of its jets would be flying WiFi-enabled beginning in March.
