Thai embassy extends condolences for Japanese girl killed by drunk Thai

Thailand’s diplomatic mission in Tokyo expressed formal condolences to the family of a high-school student killed in by an intoxicated Thai driver last week in Chiba city.

The incident also seriously injured a 20-year-old man, who was riding a bicycle with the girl, 18, when a vehicle driven by a Thai driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, crashed into them.

Authorities said the male driver they suspect of driving under the influence firmly denies having been behind the wheel. He’s been charged with operating a vehicle without a license and reckless driving resulting in death. Two other intoxicated Thai men in the vehicle were also arrested.

The incident has hit a nerve with many Japanese urging their government to revoke the free-visa privilege extended to Thais after the incident.

Japan has strict drunk-driving laws, which have effectively curbed road accidents in the country over the years.

The Thai Embassy informed Japan’s Foreign Ministry that it would like to meet with the three arrested Thai men in accordance with international law, state media reported.
