Thai doctors make a cancer treatment breakthrough with sesame seeds

The doctors of Chiang Mai University announced that they have made a cancer research breakthrough at a press conference last week. Their research has shown them that black sesame seeds have properties that help stave off cancer cells, promote regeneration of brain cells and fight cancer.

Dr. Prachya Kongthaweelert, deputy associate professor at The Thailand Excellence Center for Tissue Engineering and Stem Cells at Chiang Mai University, said that, while black sesame seeds look simple enough, they have very beneficial properties to those with cancer.

He and his team have discovered that extracting “Sesamin,” a natural chemical compound from the seeds, and using it as part of cancer treatment  can slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and create an environment in the body that stimulate antibodies, according to Thai PBS.

Dr. Prachya clarified that researchers worldwide have experimented with the Sesamin compound, but his team has taken the next step by injecting the compound directly into active and developing cancer cells that are one week old.

The team also presented a 21-year-old Lymphoma patient that has gone into remission since combining Sesamin treatment with her chemotherapy.

The woman was diagnosed two years ago and underwent chemo to kill the cancerous cells. She recovered somewhat and then added Sesamin extract to her treatment. She found that it helped speed up her recovery.

Dr. Prachya explained to the audience how Sesamin works. He said that, normally, cancer cells develop abnormal blood vessels. After having the Sesamin injected however, the growth changed.

The overall number of cancer cells was lowered because Sesamin prevents blood vessels from developing. Usually, blood vessel development is stimulated by excretions from cancer cells. And, in return, as cancer cells grow, they stimulate new blood vessel creation to feed them. Then, the blood vessels spread cancer cells to other parts of the body.

The introduction of Sesamin to the system slows new blood cell development, so the cancer cells don’t have food and they die. Sesamin also promotes production of antibodies which then attack the cancer cells. It has many benefits.

Dr. Prachya announced that patents for the Sesamin research have been filed in Thailand and abroad, including for commercial production of Sesamin.

He recommends eating sesame seeds regularly but advises users to crush and cook the seeds first and not to take more than 4 tablespoons daily to avoid stomach upset or diarrhea.
