A police officer in northeastern Khon Kaen province will receive a certificate and a title change in recognition of his bravery after he climbed two stories to save a six-month pregnant woman from a condo fire yesterday morning.

When Pol. Capt. Wayu Kampa heard the victim shout for help on the balcony of her fifth-floor condominium, he climbed the air-con condensers from the third floor to quickly reach the distressed woman, identified as Wassana Chomali, 30.

“A resident said that a pregnant woman was stuck in her room. She was shaking in panic. My plan was to climb up and help her. So I just started climbing quickly,” Capt. Wayu told reporters.

As the woman’s room was located on the same floor where the fire started, Capt. Wayu said he inspected the smoke-filled corridor before deciding it was safe to escort Wassana down via the emergency exit.

“I saw the AC condensers and thought they would be able to handle my weight. When I got there, I soaked a towel, wrapped it around her, and then escorted her down,” he said.

Wassana was sent to hospital from suffocation, but she and her unborn child are now safe, the Daily News reported

It took about 30 minutes for firefighters to control the flames. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

According to condo staff, the owner of the room where the fire broke out was not home during the incident.
