It has emerged that at least three Thai families were thought to live in Grenfell Tower, the location of the horrific London apartment fire that has already claimed 17 lives, left dozens injured, and from which many are still unaccounted for.
We reported yesterday on the story of Waewta Supareuksanon, who told BBC Thai about how her family survived the fire. As far as her family believed, there was at least one Thai man living on the 13th floor and two Thai women on either the third or fourth floor of the 24-story tower, which housed 600 people, according to Amthaipaper, a Thai newspaper based in England.
The names of the three Thais suspected to be missing have not been released, and their whereabouts are still unknown.
Besides Waewta’s family, the Thai Embassy in London has not been informed of any Thai people who survived the fire. They are still trying to contact the families. No other Thais have registered with the UK government that they survived either.
As of now, there’s no confirmation of how many Thais actually lived in the Grenfell Tower or if they might have been home at the time of the fire.
At this point, London fire officials don’t expect to find any more survivors in the burned-out building. They are now concentrating on locating bodies and investigating the fire. They expect to find the remains of many more people in the days to come and are using cadaver dogs to help locate bodies.
