Thai Commerce Ministry wants to charge U.S. woman for calling Thai rice fake on Facebook

The Ministry of Commerce is looking to charge a Californian woman for a recent Facebook post where she accused a Thai rice brand of mixing their grains with plastic — just because she didn’t know how to cook it properly.

A rant video of an Asian-American woman burning her rice by simply frying it without any water and then blaming the rice exporter has caused a surprising uproar in Thailand. Yesterday, Director-General Duangporn Rodpaya of the Foreign Trade Department said that she is discussing with the Thai Rice Exporters’ Association what they can do to protect the reputation of Thai jasmine rice.

“Now we only know that the video was from an Asian community in the U.S., but she’s not Thai. The Rice Exporters’ Association is investigating and tracking down the person who posted the video whether she misunderstood or intended to ruin the reputation of Thai rice,” Duangporn said.

The video was posted by Facebook user Felicity Prak. It has surpassed three million views and drew thousands of hateful comments from Thai netizens who called her a “buffalo.”

“The rice brand in question is a premium brand and has been sold in the U.S. for a very long time. It is the number one rice brand that consumers in America trust.”

Duangporn added that plastic is even more expensive thai rice, so it was highly unlikely that the operator would bag plastic with their rice to increase profits.

While Prak has not responded to any comments, Duangporn said the department is looking for a way to remove the video by consulting the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Post Today reported.
