Thai chef in Washington D.C. dies of COVID-19

A 66-year-old female Thai chef infected with COVID-19 died Saturday in the U.S. capital, according to the embassy there.

The head chef of a Thai restaurant in Washington D.C., she died at the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, according to Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Cherdkiat Atthakorn. Cherdkiat said the information came from the Thai Embassy there.

The embassy did not name the woman but said she held dual citizenship and had lived in the United States for a number of years.

She became the first Thai national known to have died abroad due to the outbreak, and its second Thai victim. Thailand’s first coronavirus death – a 35-year-old salesman for duty free monopoly King Power – was announced March 1.
