Another cautionary tale of poorly maintained escalators comes by way of a Thai actress who experienced their dangers up close and personal, prompting an apology today from a major downtown mall.
Channel 7 soap star Pimpaporn “Patty” Sermpanitchakit had her pants shredded after they got stuck yesterday in the machinery of an escalator at the MBK Center in downtown Bangkok.
“I’ve read news that this happened to Chinese tourists a lot but I never imagined it would happen to personally,” Pimpaporn tweeted yesterday afternoon along with pictures of her damaged trousers. She described how the end of the left side of her pants got sucked into the end of the escalator while she was trying to step off.
She added today that mall representative reached out to apologize for the incident. She made no mention of any compensation and had not responded to inquiries as of publication time.
Her escalator mishap came on the heels of a man nearly mutilated by a moving walkway at Don Mueang Airport.

Fortunately for Pimpaporn, a friend and someone else standing behind her helped free her pants from the hungry machine.
She refuted criticism that her garment-choice was to blame.
“My pants aren’t even long enough to reach the floor; they only reach my ankle,” she wrote in a reply to her own post.
