A military tribunal today ordered an army officer who killed two fellow soldiers remanded into custody.

Sgt. Maj. Yongyuth Mankornkim, 58, was taken to the 11th Military Circle Prison in Nakhon Pathom Province two days after he allegedly shot three soldiers at the Royal Thai Army College.

The officer, who the authorities said suffers from mental illness, was seen escorted into the prison. His family did not appear with him. The military court refused to grant him release on bail given the nature of his alleged crime.

The period of his remand will end in 12 days.

On Wednesday, Yongyuth was taken into custody by Dusit police after killing two fellow soldiers and injuring a third. He blamed the shooting spree on stress.

His relatives have said that Yongyuth suffered a traumatic brain injury years ago. However, authorities took Yongyuth to Vajira Hospital for a checkup Thursday, and found normal symptoms.

He faces charges of murder, attempted murder, and weapons-related violations.
