TBH2 million worth of rosewood logs seized

Authorities in the Ban Phaeng district seized one hundred and eight processed logs of rare Siamese rosewood on Sunday.

The pieces of wood, which cost around TBH 2 million at the open market, were reportedly being transferred to a boat at the rim of the Mekong River. Authorities believe that the lumber would have been sold in China, after it had passed through Laos and Vietnam by boat.

Each piece of timber measured 2-3 meters in length and was 30-40cm in width. According to MCOT Online News, Ban Phaeng district in Nakhon Phanom province is a common transfer point for smuggled wood because of its proximity to neighboring countries.

Harvesting Siamese Rosewood is restricted, which has unfortunately helped fuel demand for the wood and raised its market price.
