Taxi drivers lobby for better public image

The Nation recently ran a story about how taxicab owners are trying to repair a public image periodically damaged by the crimes of their kinfolk.

In this fight, occasional contributions from this very website certainly can’t help the cause.

However, taxi owners such as Weera Duang-prathum, who was interviewed for the story, claim that they make every effort to keep their cabs out of the hands of wrongdoers. The most common form this prevention takes is the careful screening of potential cabbies.

“I have never rented my cabs to complete strangers,” says Weera. “If I don’t know the guys personally, I won’t let them drive my taxis. Exceptions are made only when the prospective renters are recommended by someone I know.”

Other taxi owners reported on similar schemes to keep their cabs out of the hands of criminals, an attempt that apparently exists as a work in progress.
