Taxi driver robs drunk Thai-American woman, dumps her at motel with wife

A Bangkok driver and his wife were arrested for theft after they robbed a Thai-American woman taking a taxi from Khao San Road after the New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Police yesterday said taxi driver Witsanu Sawangsuk, 35, picked up the victim, only identified as “Sara,” in the early morning of Jan. 1. After the intoxicated victim passed out, Witsanu stole her Samsung phone and THB600 cash before driving to pick up his wife, 36-year-old Kwanta, on the way.

The couple then got a motel room in Wong Wien Yai district and carried the victim inside.

In an attempt to make up a story that the taxi driver just dropped two women off at the motel, Wisanu left the room, leaving his wife with Sara.

An hour later Wisanu came back for his wife. That’s when Sara woke up and ran from the room. She hopped on a motorcycle taxi and filed a police report.

Wisanu insisted he did not intend to sexually assault the victim because he and his wife have been infected with HIV for over three years and he would feel too guilty about passing it on to Sara.

Wisanu said he intended to pick up his wife and left, so Sara could wake up in a motel room and find her way home herself.

Police were skeptical about the couple’s statement. They sent the victim for a medical examination and are awaiting the results.

Police said the couple have been prosecuted for using yaba and marijuana before, and they found several photos of mobile phones stored on Wisanu’s phones, which they assume were stolen and sold via the Line application, Matichon reported.
