TAT pulls hard for the big money

Tourist, and locals, flock to Chatuchak Weekend Market

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is continuing in its effort to attract “quality” (read: rich) tourists to Thailand, with the goal of increasing tourism revenues to THB2 trillion per year by 2015.

During a five-day “action plan” workshop, which commenced yesterday, the TAT is working to make its ambitions a reality. Specifically, the TAT will focus on attracting “niche” tourists – such as honeymooners, eco-tourists and medical tourists – who they hope will spend more per capita than your average backpacker.

The Nation reports that repeat visitors to the Kingdom, who make up some 70% of its tourist population, will be encouraged to spend more money by visiting secondary sites.
