Sweet Redemption:’Fat’ internet idol gets THB700,000 for losing weight

Internet idol “Alice” was awarded THB700,000 in hard cash at a ceremony yesterday for losing 7 kilograms under pressure from the internet which called her “fat.”

Amado, a diet supplement product owned by has-been boy bander Shane Thana, presented the money to Alice at Siam Paragon yesterday after he had challenged Alice to lose 10 kilograms in three weeks to receive THB1 million, a campaign driven by men who felt fap-remorse upon realizing she was bigger than they had thought.

Without any medical supervision, Alice starved away 11 percent of her body weight and slimmed down from 65 kilograms to 58 kilograms, so she only got THB700,000. Shane Thana, who once entranced tweens as a member of “Nice 2 Meet U,” said he’d give internet idol Alice the rest of the money if she drops three more kilograms by June.

Alice, who’s famous online for her cleavage-proud selfies, is another fine example of Thai body image issues. At 65 kilograms, it’s a stretch to call her “fat,” yet her bigger body type became an object of shame from a public which only considers emaciated skinny women “beautiful.”

Alice was cyber-bullied last month after a public appearance revealed she was “bigger” in person than people expected. Her fan boys felt wrongly deceived by the selfie angles and big boobs and perhaps tainted by the idea their object of lust “looked bigger in person.”

So they trashed Alice’s Facebook to the point she had to temporarily shut down the account.

The social shame from strangers contributed to her accepting the extreme weight-loss offer. Now for accepting her “fatness,” she’s back in good public standing, and her Facebook is back in business with nearly 400,000 followers.

Way to go, us.
