Swashbuckling corsairs raid Thai vessel

The Royal Thai Navy is on the lookout for a band of swashbuckling pirates who reportedly raided a Thai vessel waving swords and blunderbusses in the Strait of Malacca on Friday evening.

Thought to port in Indonesia, the pirates made off with a tons of fuel before planting explosives on the ship’s bridge. No injuries or deaths or cries of “Arrrr!” were reported in the incident,  which the Royal Thai Navy was alerted to at about 9:40am on Sunday.

Initial reports said that the Thai freighter “Lapin” had been forcefully boarded by about a half dozen pirates, three of whom wielded guns while the others carried swords.

According to the crew of the Thai vessel, the pirates siphoned some 20,000 tons of gasoline, and another five tons of diesel fuel.

The dynamite left on the bridge by the enthusiastic pirates was neutralized by a special bomb unit dispatched from Songkhla.

The Thai ship and its crew are now safely anchored in Satun province.
