Suvarnabhumi Airport gets expanded to accommodate more passengers

Airports of Thailand (AOT) announced yesterday that it has signed contracts with three companies to expand the passenger capacity of Suvarnabhumi International Airport from its current 45 million to 60 million travelers per year.

The THB14.9 billion expansion will include a new airplane parking structure, a connection tunnel in the airport’s south and utilities. Contractors tasked with the work include Italian Thai, SG and Interlink and SCS Consortium, which will be overseeing the work, according to Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Somkid Jatusripitak.

The project is scheduled to be completed by November 2019, Post Today reported.

Somkid explained that the second phase of development of Suvarnabhumi will raise the airport’s capacity in line with its growing role as an international travel hub. He noted the work is part of the government’s economic stimulus effort, which will be followed up by the development of other airports including Don Mueang, Chiang Rai, Hat Yai and U-Tapao, according to state media.

Passenger count at Suvarnabhumi has exceeded the 40 million mark every month from October to July, which is calculated to be a five percent increase from the same period in the previous year.

AOT President Nitinai Sirismatthakarn said the increasing number of passengers at Suvarnabhumi Airport has encouraged the organization to accelerate its airport development projects to further accommodate passengers from all over the world.

In the latest figure, the number of passengers using Suvarnabhumi Airport for international flights were recorded at 30 million people, while 7 million were boarding domestic flights. The airport has facilitated some 300,000 flights — 200,000 of which are international flights and 60,000 are domestic flights.
