One of the suspects in the exchange of gunfire that resulted in the deaths of one Indian tourist at a Bangkok mall on Sunday has turned himself in.
At about 2am, Preecha Sakudompaisan, 28, turned himself in on an arrest warrant for attempted murder and carrying a weapon in public. Preecha allegedly fired a 9mm pistol during the encounter, Channel 7 reported.
Today, police are working on obtaining arrest warrants for at least five more people. Raids at the suspects’ houses revealed that they have fled.
On Sunday, the rival “Pratunam” and “Taopoon” gangs met up at a snooker club near Pavillion Watergate mall in Ratchathewi district to settle their disputes about football gambling. After failing to come to terms, the argument escalated into the shooting outside the mall.
An Indian national was killed in the shooting. Four others, including another Indian national, one Laotian national, and two Thai men, were injured.
One of the injured men Pornthep Poompuang, 23, is allegedly a gang member, Nation TV reported.
Lt. Gen. Sutthiphong Wongpin, acting commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said police have made a great progress on the case, and more suspects may turn themselves in tonight.
He said a meeting about the case is scheduled for this evening.
Editor’s Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that a Laotian national was killed. An official from Bangkok’s Erawan Center, the dispatch center for emergency medical services, has subsequently confirmed that he has survived the shooting.
