Surat Thani, the province that hosts the wildest parties in Thailand, unsurprisingly defeated Bangkok as Thailand’s happiest province, according to a survey released by Super Poll.
In the latest Gross Domestic Happiness survey, which indexed more than 30,000 participants in 77 provinces, Thailand’s average happiness score is 6.09 out of 10 points while Surat Thani scored 7.29 for the win.
Meanwhile, Bangkokians are a little sadder than the average Thai. The capital was pushed to 30th place with a happiness score of just 5.87.
Following Surat Thani, the other happiest provinces include Suphan Buri, Singburi, Sukhothai, and Chumphon, in that order.
On the other end of the scale, Phuket, the popular tourist province that some people deem paradise, earned the dubious distinction of most miserable with a score of 5.17.
According to Farang Deaths, a blog that records the deaths of foreigners in Thailand, Phuket is where most foreigners died this year, with many of them committing suicide. The island also had the highest figure of deaths and injuries resulting from road accidents last year, according to Phuket Office of the Road Safety Network.
So what about Pattaya and its many balcony exits, you may ask? The world’s capital of sex is also on the saddest state list. Following Phuket is Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, Chonburi (Pattaya), and Saraburi, in that order.
