Sucker for science? Geek out at the newly renovated science center and planetarium

Reopened after a grand renovation earlier this year, the Science Center compound is a great space in the heart of the city which showcases a number of interesting science exhibits, interactive displays, experiments, and activities. It features a planetarium, aquarium, and even robots!

An adult ticket to the three science center buildings is only THB30 (only THB20 for children). It’s an additional THB30 for the Bangkok Planetarium.

It’s a fantastic place for kids and adults alike.

The Science Center is full of informative exhibits on a variety of interesting topics. In the main building are displays on the natural environment, space, the effects of various drugs, evolution, and geology.

The Aquatic Life building is, as the name suggests, an aquarium that features some interesting species of marine life. It’s not huge, but you definitely get more than your money’s worth.

The Environment building is just off of the main compound. You’ll have to take an elevator up a few floors but the exhibits are very fun. This features many interactive displays including the world of insects, dinosaurs, a library, a pirate ship, and various other curiosities.

Some of the best displays include: animatronic archeologists, a window into a beehive, a spinning chair used to train astronauts, a dark room full of textures to play tricks on the senses, and a room that toys with perspective (I recently had my own unfortunate “run in” with this room!)

The Planetarium

The planetarium has recently gone through a huge refurbishment for THB92 million. You can now enjoy stargazing in the new high-tech digital theatre on extremely comfortable chairs.

While the only English show is 10am on Tuesday, it’s a great experience to sit back and enjoy space and the wonders of the night sky on the huge curved dome, no matter what language you speak.

Fees are different for this show. THB50 for adults, THB 30 for children. It’s well worth the price of admission.

While the planetarium is brand new, some of the other displays are quite old and in need of repair. However, don’t let this discourage you. There are still plenty of things to keep you occupied and entertained. Plus, for THB 30, you won’t find many better deals than this.
