Study suggests campaign against drugs affects women the most

A recently released research report on female inmates has concluded that the Thai government’s campaign against drugs has not done enough to actually solve the problem at hand and has affected a large number of women negatively

Around 85% of all female inmates in Thailand are in prison for drug-related cases. Thailand is alleged to have the largest number of female prisoners next to the United States, with almost 19,000 female inmates in the country.

Napaporn Havanon led a team of five in conducting the study on female inmates. She has presented the team’s findings to the Justice Department. In the study, Napaporn insists that judges hand out severe punishments since the country treats drug traffickers as enemies of the state, the Nation reported.
