Stretch of Chao Phraya seeks World Heritage status

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is campaigning for a stretch of the Chao Phraya River to be added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage sites.

Jumpol Sumpaopol, a deputy Bangkok Governor, stated that the House of Representative’s Standing Committee on Lands, Natural Resources and the Environment had agreed to push for the proposal.

The stretch of river nominated as a World Heritage site starts at the Phra Phuttha Yodfa Bridge, or Memorial Bridge, and continues to the Wasukree Pier. According to the Nation, the BMA has undertaken this campaign in order to increase public awareness of the river’s importance and the need to conserve it.
