Tong Nuea Kao, a lakorn story of an unbelievably awful, alcoholic mother and her too-good-to-be-true son, was crowned the best lakorn of 2013 yesterday at the Nattarat Awards, the Thai television industry’s top annual awards program.

Aside from being tapped as best lakorn, the popular television drama also scooped up eight other awards including best directing, best lead actor and actress and best screenplay.

A remake of an older award-winning series, Tong Nuea Kao told the story of Lamyong, a raunchy woman in 1960s who lets alcohol and greed ruin her life. The alcoholic Lamyong proceeds to have five children from different fathers, while her oldest son reluctantly stays on the path of Buddhist Dhamma and philosophy while nurturing his siblings and sick mother.
