Stellar performance: Thai-Australian comedy ‘The Rocket’ scoops 29 awards worldwide

A comedy-drama featuring a team of Thai actors is now showing locally after winning 29 awards worldwide.

“The Rocket,” directed by Aussie Kim Mordaut, features a 12-year-old lead, Thai actor Sitthiphon Disamoe, and comedian star Suthep Po-ngam, the uncle of Rhatha “Yayaying” Phongam, the actress featured in Only God Forgives with Ryan Gosling.

The rocket tells the story of Ahlo, a 10-year-old boy, who is believed to bring bad luck and blamed for every bad event happening in his tribe. Condemned by people around him, he leads his family through Laos to find a new home. To prove he’s not bad luck, he builds a giant rocket to enter the most exciting and dangerous competition of the year: the Rocket Festival.

The film has been praised for depicting a fascinating story of rural life in a land scarred by war and committed to religious belief.

The Rocket has received 29 awards from 13 countries including the Best Debut Film and Amnesty International Film Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival, VoiceTV reported.
