Smokes and booze cost a little more over the weekend after another sin tax added 2 percent to the cost.
The little heralded “Sports Act” apparently went into effect on Friday, adding another baht or three to most packs of cigarettes and alcohol to pay for a newly established “national sports development fund,” whatever that means.
Producers pay about THB3 billion annually to a health foundation and about THB2 billion to state broadcaster Thai PBS, who omitted that detail in their report on the tax but was pointed out by Bangkok Post.
Sin taxes are a popular means of securing revenue for health, education and public welfare programs.
