Standoff enters 2nd day at home of trigger-happy Bangkok cop

Nearly 24 hours after a disgruntled cop fired multiple shots in Bangkok’s Sai Mai district, police as of Wednesday morning were still trying to talk him down.

The standoff between police and Lt. Col. Kittikarn “Inspector Karn” Sangboon, entered a second day today with commandos surrounding his sealed off house and attempting to negotiate with the 51-year-old inspector.

Police were notified at around 11am on Tuesday by Kittikarn’s neighbors that they had heard him fire his handgun several times. No injuries have been reported.

When police arrived, Kittikarn fired multiple times at them from his house. The standoff hours later involved gunfire and tear gas, which police shot into the house.

Neighbors and the public were advised to stay clear from the area while the operation was ongoing. Some seniors in the neighborhood were evacuated.

Kittikarn was said to suffer from mental illness. He works at the Intelligence Development Center for the Special Branch Bureau.

Deputy National Police Chief Gen. Torsak Sukwimol was expected to arrive at the scene later today.

This morning, an officer identified as Sgt. Sathaporn Kaewpuang, was shot in his helmet, but the bullet did not go through. Sathaporn was safe.
