The crowded streets of Bangkok may have to make way for Formula 1 cars in 2014.
Kanokphand Chulakasem, governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, along with an advisor to Red Bull Heir Chalerm Yoovidhya, met Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone over the weekend at the Singapore Grand Prix and is close to finalizing a deal, according to reports.
Ironically, Chalerm’s son Vorayuth “Boss” Yoovidhya is currently awaiting trial for hitting and killing a policeman with his Ferrari at high speed on Sukhumvit Road. “Boss” is facing charges of hit and run and drunk driving and recently agreed to pay the policeman’s family THB3 million.
Private companies like Red Bull and Singha Beer would help pay the annual fee for the race to operate, the Press Association reported.
The Press Association, ESPNStar, and Reuters and more sources have quoted Chulakasem as telling the Bangkok Post that “It will be a city race like that in Singapore and Monaco, and it will be a night race like the Singapore Grand Prix.”
However, there is currently no such news report that we can find on the Bangkok Post about F1 in Bangkok.
So is this all a ruse? Is F1 happening? We’ll just have to wait and see.
