Wait a minute, is this Canada?
An international hockey competition is coming to Bangkok. As in ice hockey. On ice. We’ll let that one sink in for a moment.
From March 16 to 24, Bangkok is set to play host to the IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia. The competition will feature 10 national teams, including perennial cold weather powerhouses like the United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong (note the sarcasm).
According to a recent piece in the New York Times, there is quite the burgeoning hockey sub-culture in the City of Angels (what?) despite the oppressively hot weather. Of particular interest, there are 9 hockey rinks in the Bangkok area, including the recently opened Rink Ice Arena, which is reportedly built to official NHL specifications.
This year’s IIHF Challenge Cup supplements the more casual “Land of Smiles” recreational tourney held in Bangkok every October. Who would have thought?
