Thai teenager (and relative WTA Tour newcomer) Luksika Kumkhum pulled off a major win in her grand slam debut down under, stunning 39th ranked Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden by a score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-4. The victory makes her the second Thai woman to win a grand slam singles match.
As the Nation reported, Luksika got off to a strong start, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first set before falling behind 5-3. With her back against the wall, Luksika successfully rallied to force a tiebreak which she subsequently won. The teen then proceeded to close out the match in straight sets.
In the second round she goes against young American star Jamie Hampton.
