Construction on the Bangkok Futsal Arena has finished, five days after the launch of the 2012 Futsal World Cup for which it was meant to be built.
Football governing body FIFA sent officials to check the arena yesterday afternoon and they are expected to decide soon whether it is fit to host any of the remaining matches in the tournament.
Flooring on the arena, which had been the main construction snag, was completed at 8am yesterday, just hours before the FIFA inspection.
Construction laborers had worked non-stop since 2pm on Sunday to installed the US-made wood parquet imported from China, the Bangkok Post reported.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration had sped up work on the THB1.2 billion stadium earlier this year after it got behind schedule due to last year’s floods.
City Hall spokesman Wasan Miwong said the city has handed FIFA safety documents, including an endorsement of the building’s safety by the Engineering Institute of Thailand, and measures to deal with potential fires and brawls among futsal fans, the Bangkok Post reported.
If the stadium is approved it will host quarter-final and semi-final rounds, as well as the Nov. 18 final match.
