Bangkok Futsal Arena construction further delayed as FIFA World Cup edges nearer

Construction delays and more problems have further delayed the completion of the state-of-the-art, 12,000 seater Bangkok Futsal Arena despite assurance from Bangkok governor Sukhumbhand Paribatra last week that the stadium would be ready for the FIFA Futsal World Cup.

Despite around-the-clock construction from over 3,000 workers, the handover deadline to FIFA has been postponed to October 29 from the original schedule of October 21. According to Mr Sukhumbhand the cause of delay is customs clearance problems of the wooden floors that they have imported from China.

Instead, FIFA representatives went ahead and inspected the other venues of the FIFA Futsal World Cup: Nakhon Ratchasima’s Chatchai Hall, Bangkok’s Hua Mark Indoor Stadium, and Nimibutr Gymnasium. The tournament runs Nov. 1-18.

According to the Bangkok Post, FIFA also moved the November 1 opening ceremony to the Hua Mark Indoor Stadium and the Nong Chok arena was scheduled to hold the matches for the quarter-final stage.

The construction of the arena is being handled by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration with a budget of THB1.6 billion. The impressive building was built on a 10-rai plot near Mahanakorn University of Technology. The stadium is five storyys high and stands at a height of 25m.
