Southern Thailand hit by biggest blackout ever

Fourteen provinces in southern Thailand were hit by a massive power outage on Tuesday night. The blackout began at about 7pm and power starting to return at certain areas by 8pm.

However, most tourist spots in Phuket were still submerged in complete darkness two hours after the power outage. Reports said that some areas might not even get power until this morning.

Provinces affected were Chumphon, Krabi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Narathiwat, Pattani, Phang Nga, Phatthalung, Phuket, Ranong, Satun, Songkhla, Surat Thani, Trang and Yala.

Authorities said the power outage was primarily caused by a failure in the high voltage transmission power lines from the Central to the Southern Region through Bang Saphan district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province. Reports that the outage was terrorist-related were immediately shot down, reports the Bangkok Post.
