Sondhi Limthongkul, the former frontman of the Yellow Shirts, or the People’s Alliance for Democracy, has been released on bail by the Supreme Court after he posted assets valued at THB12 million as a guarantee.
Sondhi was granted temporary release to appeal against the Appeals Court. On Aug. 7, the court had upheld a 20-year sentence handed down to Sondhi two years ago for violating the Securities and Exchange Act.
The case stretches back two decades, and he was first indicted 14 years ago. After being found guilty in 2012, Sondhi was released on bail and avoided jail time. Last October, he also received a two-year sentence for lese majeste. Sondhi was released on bail and avoided jail time.
Sondhi, once a Thaksin Shinawatra ally, organized the Yellow Shirts in protests which triggered the 2006 coup that toppled Thaksin, kicking off nearly a decade of political turmoil.
