Something fishy’s going on: Mass fish death in the Mae Klong river

There has been a large number of fish floating dead in and near the Mae Klong river where fish cage farms are located. What’s worse, a dozen stingrays have been found dead as well.

According to Thai PBS, 12 giant stingrays have already been found dead this month.

An investigation team led by Samut Sakhon governor Kamchatka Tansatien and director of Chulalongkorn’s Veterinary Medical Aquatic Animal Research Center (VMAARC) have began an inspection to find out the reason behind the deaths.

They tested the quality of the water, and have concluded that the cause of their deaths was most likely from water pollution. Apart from water contamination, the biochemical oxygen demand, or BOD, is also low and lacking in quantity in the river.

Who is to blame for polluting the water is still unknown, but nearby factories that are located near the river bank are being targeted as suspects.
