A 76-year-old Thai woman who mysteriously disappeared from her home about eight months ago has finally been found. Unfortunately, the discovery has confirmed the worst.

Yesterday, Nong Phai district police received a report about the discovery of a human skull and various other human skeletal remains scattered across a cassava plantation in Phetchabun province.

The condition of the remains suggests she had been dead for at least several months now, reported Khaosod.

Sangwan Chaisri, the farm’s 55-year-old owner, was reportedly the first to discover the bones. Sangwan said he noticed some white objects in the field as he harvested cassava with his wife and another employee.

“At first I thought somebody left a football here, but then I looked closer and it was a human skull,” he told local media in an interview.

Sangwan then called his wife and employee over to take a look. At that point, the group noticed the other pieces of bone surrounding the skull and immediately notified authorities.

Pranom Yurod, 49, arrived shortly thereafter, saying said she heard about the discovery of human bones and wanted to see the remains.

Pranom explained that she believed it could be her mother, 76-year-old Samree Buasup, who mysteriously disappeared from their house on June 23.

She said the family had filed a missing persons report months before and had gathered groups to search for Samree on numerous occasions since her disappearance, reported Sanook.

Pranom said she never gave up hope, until yesterday, when a neighbor told her about the discovery.

The family confirmed that the bones were almost certainly Samree’s given that pieces of her clothing were found near it. Moreover, the bones were found just three kilometers from their family home.

Pranom said she remembers washing the shirt, that was also discovered, for her mom with her very own hands. She went on to describe incidents with her mother that suggested she may have suffered from dementia.

Though the cause of death has not been finalized, the family told police that they don’t necessarily want to know. Regardless, police have told Coconuts Bangkok they will conduct a post-mortem forensic examination at a local hospital to make that determination. At this point, they do not suspect foul play.

The bones have reportedly been handed over to the relatives in order for them to organize a proper funeral.
