Singkorn pass set for Wednesday opening

Starting Wednesday, May 8, the Singkorn temporary pass located at Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Muang district will become a permanent checkpoint between the countries of Thailand and Myanmar.

A ceremony will take place at Singkorn pass tomorrow to mark the opening of the new checkpoint. Governor Veera Sriwattanatrakul said the opening has been approved by both countries, adding that this is the first of three checkpoints which will be upgraded to permanent status.

The two others are Three Pagodas Pass between Kanchanaburi and Myanmar’s Phayatongsu town, and Ban Nam Pu Ron, which passes between Kanchanaburi and Myanmar’s Tiki town.

The move is aimed at fostering trade relations between Thailand and Myanmar.

Singkhorn, which is situated at Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Muang district, lies across from the Mortong town of Myanmar. The Singkorn checkpoint will connect Thailand with Mergui, one of Myanmar’s major towns.

According to the Bangkok Post, the discussion between Thailand and Myanmar on these crossing upgrades happened during the ASEAN Summit in Brunei, last April 25. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Myanmar President Thein Sein both attended the conference.
