Set for a facelift: Bangkok’s mass transit

For commuters in Bangkok who have questioned the existence of an untimely bus, your prayers may finally have been answered.

An improvement to Bangkok’s mass transit could solicit a collective sigh of relief from commuters.  But don’t hold your breath, with a hefty 2 trillion baht price tag the proposal is still under deliberation.

The Transport Minister Chadchart Sittipunt wants 6,000 bus stops to be covered and clearly marked with signage and route schedules, as well as an increase in buses during rush hours. Also on the table for discussion is the quality and cleanliness of water transport and associated pier facilities.

This bill is working in conjunction with the proposal for nationwide construction of four high-speed train routes.

It comes as no surprise that traffic congestion is one of the city’s largest problems. However, Bangkok’s mass transit is unreliable which drives urban dwellers to have a loss of faith and an increase in road traffic.

Encouraging commuters to use mass transit is the key to success because the proposal focuses on environmental impact assessments (EIA). The bill has passed the first reading by the House of Representatives and is now entering the second reading.

The enormous project will require the involvement of many government agencies and additional committees, as reported by English News
