Senator calls for lead investigator to be taken off Akeyuth case

Somchai Sawaengkarn, chairman of the Senate committee on human rights, liberty and consumer protection, has called for the current lead investigator to be removed from his position investigating the murder of Akeyuth Anchanbutr.

Akeyuth, a lawyer, businessman and outspoken critic of the Shinawatras, was murdered last week by his driver. Though the driver claimed robbery as his motive, many have suggested that the killing was in fact political in nature.

Somchai has called for Metropolitan Police Commissioner Pol Lt-General Kamronwit Thupkrajang, lead investigator into Akeyuth’s death, to be removed from the case, citing the two men’s acrimonious past.

According to Somchai, Kamronwit and Akeyuth sued each other in the past, therefor invalidating Kamronwit’s ability to lead an investigation into Akeyuth’s disappearance.

According to the Nation, Somchai also called on human rights groups such as the National Human Rights Commission to help oversee the investigation and ensure its probity.
