Security measures extended across capital

Thailand’s emergency security measures have been extended beyond the administrative center to cover all districts of the capital and several surrounding areas due to escalating political unrest.

Under the Internal Security Act, security forces can close roads at will, declare curfews, disallow the use of electronic devices and respond to threats. The measures will remain in effect through the end of the year.

Speaking the nation Monday night, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra cited the disruption of the finance and foreign affairs ministries as factors in the decision to extend the ISA over all of Bangkok, Nonthaburi, the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakan, and the Lat Lum Kaew district of Pathum Thani. Despite imposition of the elevated security condition, Yingluck gave assurances that force would not be used against the public.
