Locksmiths are working feverishly to crack open a century-old safe in an old bank building in the hopes of unearthing buried treasure.
Feverish speculation over what’s inside the mystery vault has mounted since it was discovered beneath an old Siam Commercial Bank building in Nakhon Si Thammarat’s Thung Song district on Sunday.
After three locksmiths tried and failed to pick the locks of the safe, self-proclaimed “master locksmith” Sitthisak Rooprasert turned up today with his sleeves rolled up, promising to crack it in just three days, reported Khaosod English.
The underground vault is particularly difficult to open as it has a complicated locking mechanism with four old rusty keyholes.
District mayor Songchai Wongwatcharadumrong sadly put the kibosh on blowing the safe open, Italian-Job-style, saying the 108-year-old building was in an historic area earmarked for preservation and restoration.
Sitthisak says he would charge THB25,000 to open the vault carefully, or knock off 10 grand if he can just destroy the keyholes.
The question remains: who will get the treasure?
Meanwhile, here’s Michael Caine telling us how NOT to crack something open.
