The Thai Meteorological Department announced yesterday that summer has officially arrived, and we could be looking at a slightly cooler summer than the sweltering hot season of 2016.

The department’s director-general Wanchai Sakudomchai, announced that the highest temperatures should hover around 42-43 degrees Celsius. While this is hardly “cool,” it is a little lower than what Thailand experienced last summer.

The summer of 2016 was a record-breaking season in Thailand when the country saw the hottest temperature ever recorded 44.6 degrees Celsius in Mae Hong Son. We also experienced the longest heatwave in at least 65 years.

Officially, summer began on Friday and will go through the middle of May. The Meteorological Society declared the start of summer based on changes in the wind and rapidly rising daytime temperatures that indicate the start of the hottest season, reported Bangkok Post.

Bangkok’s highest temperatures this year should only be about 40 degrees Celsius. The North and Northeast should feel the brunt of the heat this summer.
