RIP Khlong Thom: All the charming chaos swept away by city (photos)

It was beloved mess, a popular market that drew locals and tourists alike. But the Khlong Thom market was also blamed for pinching a traffic nerve which contributed to miserable road conditions in the Samphanthawong district, and for that the city finally moved in to clear it out last week.

On Sunday the cleanup began of the area’s century-old chaos around Chakkrawat Road, where 3,000 vendors sold everything from second-hand shoes and power tools to toy guns before they were forced to relocate to 11 spaces offered by City Hall.

Coconuts TV recently toured one wonderful dimension of the Khlong Thom market with the ubergeeks of Nerd Alert.

Many vendors were expected to move to a space at Southern Bus Terminal in the Taling Chan district or Soi Chulalongkorn 12 behind MBK Center, according to Komchadluek.

Authorities will continue to monitor the old Khlong Thom to make sure no vendors return to operate there.

The clean-up of Khlong Thom will continue daily until Sunday, Kapook reported.
