Hundreds of commuters were trapped on a BTS train without lights or air conditioning for nearly an hour due to a system malfunction yesterday during rush hour. The breakdown also caused hundreds of others to be stranded on the platforms without a ride home.
A train was reportedly trapped between Sanam Pao and Victory Monument stations at 6:24pm and caused a delay on the entire length of the Sukhumvit Line, according to a statement from the BTS. A video from inside the trapped train posted by Facebook user Nicknigar Thanandarangkura shows that the power was out but audio from the commercials was still playing on the car’s speakers, though no picture could be seen.
“A whole new experience on BTS, which has recently increased the fares. The lights were out. The air conditioning didn’t work. There was limited oxygen, but the sound system of the commercials still worked. Where do the sounds come from? Did you increase the fares to develop the commercial’s sound system?” User Nicknigar wrote, in a public post that has over 3,600 shares.
The user said that the commuters on the train had to open the windows to let some air in and the train finally reached the Victory Monument station nearly an hour later.

Meanwhile, more passengers were stuck in crowded train stations all the way to Mochit, as commuters went on Twitter to leave raging comments.
“The trains don’t work, but you keep letting new passengers tap their cards into the platforms. You should bar people from going in and wasting their money. Your employees are not trained for this? I’m so mad. It’s like I was cheated,” user @mileycmg17 said.
BTS announced that the Sukhumvit Line was back on schedule at 7:39pm. It has not issued a statement explaining the breakdown.
