Demolition of the Ratchayothin flyover has begun and both Ratchadaphisek Road and Phahon Yothin Road have been at a standstill all day.
On the outbound side of Phahon Yothin Road, traffic was jammed last night for eight kilometers, starting at Ratchayothin intersection and remaining congested as far back as Saphan Khwai intersection at rush hour.
Due to increased congestion, police are suggesting that people avoid: Lat Phrao Road, Lat Phrao-Wang Hin Road, Chokchai 4 Road, Sutthisan Road, Kaset-Nawamin Road and Vibhavadi Rangsit Road as well as Srirat Expressway.
In order to avoid getting stuck in a traffic snarl, officials have suggested these alternate routes: Instead of Ratchadapisek Road, take Ratchadapisek Sois 48 and 46/1 to Phahon Yothin 35 or Ratchadapisek Soi 46 to Phahon Yothin Soi 33; Instead of Phahon Yothin, take Phahon Yothin Soi 30 to Ratchadapisek Soi 36; Instead of Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, take Vibhavadi Rangsit Soi 30 to Phahon Yothin Soi 21 or Vibhavadi Rangsit Soi 32 to Phahon Yothin Soi 23.
Though the demolition of the flyover will be finished in January. The new tunnel being built to replace it will take two years to complete, reported Bangkok Post.
It will take one year to complete a flyover that connects Ratchayothin intersection to Phahon Yothin Road, which will help ease traffic somewhat until the tunnel is complete. Until that time, expect to spend a lot of time in traffic.
